The DAO enzyme is the one that helps break down histamine from food. In some of us it works less efficiently — which is where the trouble starts.

What I learned about DAO (from experience + what I read)

  • You usually take it 15–20 minutes BEFORE a meal, not after.
  • It doesn't "fix" the intolerance — it can only help with a particular meal.

An important thing I found out

  • Aspirin can block the DAO enzyme — one more reason to discuss any medication with your doctor.
  • Alcohol has a similar effect (it blocks DAO).

Everything else (vitamin C, other supplements people talk about) I also approached cautiously: one at a time, in small amounts, keeping an eye on my reactions.

My takeaway: supplements can be a help, not a magic fix — and never without talking to your doctor.

A practical trick: before I try any new supplement, I write it down — what it is, when I take it, how I feel over the next few hours and days. That way I can see clearly whether it actually helps or it's just in my head, and I have something to show my doctor. (And I still decide with my doctor whether it makes sense at all.)

Please note: do NOT take supplements or medication based on this article. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
